Selecting Safe Toys

The holiday season is a time for giving and gratitude, and many parents select new toys for their kids every year. Toys are a great way to help young children develop mentally, and some toys and games help older kids to go outside and interact socially with friends or neighbors. However, it?s important to keep safety in mind when buying gifts this year, as some toys come with risks.
A great example of a higher risk toy is the ?fidget spinner,? which has been a popular toy for kids of all ages in 2017. Certain fidget spinner toys contain small parts that can break off and cause choking. The always popular toy weapons, like swords and drones can cause blunt force injuries, eye injuries, or other bodily harm. Toys that act as launching devices or ?guns? can cause eye injury as well if used too close to the face. Any toy or device that?s intended for a child to stand or balance on can cause injury or harm if the child falls. These are just a few of the dangers presented with popular gifted toys.
Below are some simple steps you can take as a parent or if you?re purchasing toys for children:
? Look for toy recalls in the news before buying
? Make sure toys gifted to children are age appropriate
? Be cautious of any motorized toys or riding toys.
? Make sure helmets and safety gear are included with any riding toys
? Avoid toys that have magnets or magnetized materials as swallowing these materials can be very dangerous.
If you have concerns about a toy you are purchasing as a gift or a toy your child has received, it is best to either find another gift or restrict the use of the toy.
If you are only comfortable with your child using a toy under adult supervision, make sure those rules are communicated to the child before they begin playing with it, and keep the toy in a place where the child must ask to gain access to it.
