The holiday season certainly comes with its fair share of health-demising opportunities. Between holiday office parties, social gatherings and generally less physical activity, most people report a 5-10 pound weight gain between Thanksgiving and New Year?s Eve. The Kroger Dietitians are here to help! Follow our 5 easy steps to a wholesome holiday to prevent any extra weight gain this holiday season:
1. Lighten Up Your Beverages
Eggnog, apple cider and mulled wine sure do taste delicious but they can really pack on extra calories. One cup of eggnog could set you back over 220 calories and 11 g of fat; and that is if it?s alcohol free! Don?t let liquid calories sabotage your holiday health goals and opt for lower calorie versions of your favorite seasonal beverages or try something new like a Cranberry Lime Party Spritzer. Another quick tip is to sip a glass of water between each drink to help prevent overindulging.
2. Eat a Better Breakfast
Most holiday celebrations begin in the afternoon and evening, so make a balanced, healthy breakfast your goal for the season. Start the day off right by incorporating at least three food groups into your morning meal. A classic example would be wholesome Cheerios topped with half of a sliced banana and skim milk! Cheerios provide a good amount of fiber, which can help you feel more full and may help control your cholesterol!
3. Out Smart the Cold Weather
When the temperature drops, so does our desire to go outside. Keep your activity level up this holiday season by engaging in more indoor activities! Take the family to an indoor trampoline park or play hide and seek with your kids around the house. Other tricks include getting off the couch and doing squats during commercial breaks or setting a timer on your phone to get up and walk around every 30 minutes!
4. Choose Your Indulgences Wisely
The holiday season usual comes with those special treats you can only get one time a year; so why waste your calories on foods you can eat all year round? When hitting the holiday buffet, prioritize those items that you absolutely must have and leave the everyday common items for another meal. The holidays should be enjoyable so eat the foods you want without wasting time on the foods you can get any other time!
5. Snack Smarter
Healthy snacks can be excellent tools to keep your mealtime eating in check but unhealthy snacks can easily derail your whole day. Try keeping healthy snacks handy at all times by stocking your fridge with ready to eat fruits and vegetables and make a large batch of crunchy trail mix! Combine plain Cheerios with unsalted nuts and dried fruit and portion into ? cup snack bags for a perfect on-the-go snack!
