Managing Type II Diabetes

One in 10 Americans currently suffer from diabetes, and approximately 90 percent have type II diabetes. People over the age of 45 are most often diagnosed with the disease, but it can also affect children, teens, and young adults, especially those who are overweight or don?t exercise frequently.
For those who have type II diabetes, keeping your symptoms in check is a big part of staying healthy. Unlike some other health conditions, diabetes is managed every day by the patient, and only occasionally by a healthcare provider. Below are key steps to management of type II diabetes at home.
- Eat healthy
- Stay active, try to exercise at least three times per week
- Check your blood sugar regularly
- Manage stress with walks, breathing, or meditation
- Know what to do about a blood sugar high or low
- Keep diabetes supplies in your home and stored properly
- Monitor your skin, eyes, and feet daily, watching for changes and issues
Your healthcare provider may prescribe oral medication, insulin or other injectable medications to help keep your blood sugar in check. Regular check-ins with a healthcare provider are encouraged, especially if new symptoms occur or your condition changes.
