As the end of July approaches, its time to consider the many important aspects of sending the kids back to school. From eating and sleeping habits to ?screen time? and carrying a backpack properly, there are both medical considerations and healthy habits to instill in the kids before they catch their first bus of the school year.
In part one of our back-to-school blog, we examine the medical factors that can set the kids up for success at school.
Healthy Eating - Summer is all about fun, and that can include food. From sugary breakfasts to ice cream, there are plenty of delicious treats that the kids love in the summer. But as school starts, it?s important to ensure they?re eating healthier so they can stay alert and engaged at school.
A healthy, school-year diet starts with a nutritious breakfast (even if your running late before school!), continues with a lunch absent of junk food, and even includes appropriate snacks before bed. Try to avoid caffeine and sugar as bedtime approaches, because it can make a good night?s sleep more difficult.
Sleep Routine - Children and adolescents typically need between eight and 10 hours of sleep each night, and the best way to do this is to establish a bedtime and morning routine that allows for it. Parents can start working towards the school-year bedtime as the summer comes to an end. Once the school year starts, it is also important not to let the weekend routine stray too far from the weekday routine.
Vision and Hearing ? As children grow from playing and small group activities at school into full classrooms, vision and hearing become even more important for a child?s ability to learn. Kids should have their eyesight checked as they begin the more lecture-based grades, and a hearing test can be conducted if you have concerns about your child?s ability to hear a teacher in the front of a classroom. These test are recommended before the start of Kindergarten.
Vaccines ? Many schools require vaccines before children can enroll, so its important to check with the school during the summer to see what is required and make sure the kids are up-to-date before the first day of school rolls around.
Sports Physical ? If the kids are playing scholastic sports, many schools and athletic associations require a sports physical. This is another area where parents should check with their school or school website during the summer.
The Little Clinic can help with administering vaccines and conducting sports physicals. Find a location a www.TheLittleClinic.com.
In Part two of our back-to-school blog, we?ll look at the routines and habits that can make for a successful school year.
