In addition to the medical considerations discussed in Part 1 of our Back-To School blog, healthy routines and habits can also make a tremendous difference in a child?s success during the school year. Below are a few considerations for kids and parents as the school year approaches.
Establish a Routine ? The routine should include a regular bedtime and wake up time, but can also include set times for studying, homework, watching TV and playing outside. A set dinnertime can also help maintain structure after school each day.
Create a Study Space ? Kids have an established study space at school ? their desk ? so why wouldn?t they have one at home for studying or homework? Having a comfortable, well-lit study space can also help prevent kids from being distracted by the TV.
Limit Screen Time ? Television, video games, smart phones and tablets have become a regular part of life for children. Learning to use new technology is an important aspect of education, but too much ?screen time,? especially later in the evening, can limit sleep and disengage kids from their families and their school work.
Communication ? One of the most important things parents can do to set a child up for success is to set expectations and communicate with the kids regularly about their challenges. Communication can be a first step in preventing issues like bullying and poor grades and can also help parents determine a child?s interests and passions.
