June is Men?s Health Month, a nationally recognized designation since 1994. Throughout the month, health organizations take steps to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.
There are several simple steps for men to take to ensure better health, and three of them are always the focus of Men?s Health Month. First, it is important for men to eat healthy. Second, regular activity and exercise can prevent health problems. Finally, regular check-ups are essential in diagnosing and treating health issues early.
In addition to these bedrock health practices, men also face a number of health risks throughout their daily activities. As we celebrate Men?s Health Month, consider these situations when evaluating your own health or the health of the special men in your life.
? Men are more likely than women to be in workplace accidents, so extra care should be taken to wear appropriate protective apparel and safe use of heavy-duty equipment. This can include wearing ear and eye protection, operating heavy machinery with caution and always abiding by safety rules posted on the equipment and wearing any equipment such as seatbelts or harnesses. Getting adequate sleep is also a contributing factor to helping prevent workplace accidents.
? Men often drive the family car, so they should avoid texting, wear glasses or contacts if prescribed and insist that everyone in the car wear a seat belt.
? Men also take on many household repairs and other maintenance projects, so they should take proper safety considerations when it comes to ladders, eye safety, power tools and any other potential hazards in the home.
