As the calendar turns to summer, the kids are finishing up school and embarking on all sorts of summer adventures. Lack of daily structure and a defined schedule, as well as vacations, camps and activities create additional challenges for keeping the kids healthy, happy and safe.
Have the best summer ever by observing these tips:
Playing Outdoors
? Require helmets for any biking, scooter or skating activities
? Play as far away from the street as possible
? Use bug spray and sunscreen
Summer Camp
? Visit The Little Clinic for a camp physical
? Make counselors aware of any allergies or other medical conditions for your child
? Pre-treat clothing and camping gear with an insect repellant to ward off bugs and ticks
Healthy Habits
? Keep a routine ? As much as possible, bedtime, meal times, etc. should stay consistent during the summer
? Have healthy, convenient snacks available such as pre-cut fruits and veggies, bottled water and low-fat dairy string cheese or yogurt
? Make the kids maintain their chores and other responsibilities
? Balance the desire to lounge in front of the television with some active play most days of the week and encourage reading books and magazines to further stimulate your brain
With proper preparation and just a little structure, summer can be easy on mom and dad and a whole lot of fun for the kids.
