Build a Better Breakfast with MyBowl?

You may have heard of USDA?s MyPlate, the ?new food pyramid? that helps Americans build balanced meals. But what does a balanced breakfast look like? Can breakfast cereal be a part of MyPlate? If you?re a cereal-lover looking to bring nutrition and balance to your breakfast, you can use MyBowl as a tool to complement your balanced eating routine.
MyBowl encourages the inclusion of at least three food groups at breakfast- grains, low-fat dairy, and fruits (extras like seeds, nuts, and nut butters can also be included for an extra protein boost). This pattern helps achieve a few goals of good nutrition:
Grains help you recharge in the morning. Grains contain carbohydrates, a nutrient that provides energy for your body to help start the day right. Aim to make at least half of your grains whole.
Low-fat dairy provides protein, which helps keep you fuller longer while also providing calcium and vitamin D.
Finally, adding a fruit first thing in the morning puts you that much closer to achieving your fruit and vegetable goal for the day. About 80% of Americans don?t get enough fruit in a day, so we can all use a boost! Fruit provides fiber, vitamins, and minerals essential for health.
Another benefit of the MyBowl approach is the opportunity to have fun with flavor. Try these combinations to keep your breakfast as lively as it is nutritious!
