Tuesday, February 14 is not just Valentine?s Day. It?s also National Donor Day, a date which aims to raise awareness about the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. The observance also gives us an opportunity to appreciate those we love who have given or received a donation.
Did you know that more than 119,000 men, women and children are on the national transplant waiting list right now and another person is added every 10 minutes? This statistic underscores the importance of donors signing up to donate organs, tissues, marrow, platelets and blood.
Signing up to be an organ donor is an easy way to potentially save lives. Visit https://www.organdonor.gov/register.htmlto sign up on your state registry to be a donor. Most states let you choose which organs and tissues you want to donate and you can update your donor status at any time. While 95 percent of adults in the U.S. support organ donation, only 48 percent are actually signed up as donors, so now is the time to make the commitment to help someone else through organ, tissue, marrow, platelets or blood donation.
More information about National Donor Day and organ donation can be found on the U.S. Government Information on Organ Donation and Transplantation website at https://organdonor.gov/index.html.
