Prepping for Thursday's Big Meal

Much of the Unites States celebrates Thanksgiving, and with it, one of the most highly anticipated meals of the entire holiday season! Is it possible to enjoy all your favorite things and not overdo it? It sure is, with a little planning.
On Thanksgiving Day, be sure to eat breakfast.
Some people skip breakfast so that they have more ?room? in their stomach for indulging later in the day, but this is not recommended. Breakfast is essential everyday to fuel your body after an overnight fast. And, by having a healthy breakfast, you are more likely to not overeat ?too much? at the Thanksgiving meal.
Don?t forget water.
Limiting sugary beverages and alcoholic beverages helps reduce your overall caloric intake for the day. Water is also recommended throughout the day and at mealtime to help with hydration and digestion.
Choose only favorites from the buffet line.
Thanksgiving often presents many more options that you would normally have available for dinner. Rather than eating something you have often, such as mashed potatoes, choose a few of your favorites or special dishes you don?t get all year long, like grandma?s green bean casserole or your aunt?s chicken and dumplings in moderate portions. Complement your favorite foods with other lower calorie dishes.
Wait before having seconds.
After having a moderate helping, take about 10-20 minutes to talk with the other guests before having dessert or seconds of anything. Often, this time lapse will actually help signal your stomach that ?you?re full.?
Get active.
If possible, remain active after the meal. This could be a short walk with the dog, tossing a football with the kids or even playing a card game around the table with the adults. The point is to move. Remaining upright after a meal reduces your chances of heartburn or reflux that occurs with that after-meal trip to the sofa for football or a nap. And, the activity helps with digestion and burns off some of the calories you have consumed.
