Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections. Many more people die from other conditions that were complicated by an antibiotic-resistant infection.*
During Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, Nov. 14-18, The Little Clinic is encouraging its patients to learn how they can help address this issue that has become a public health concern.
What can you do?
-Never demand an antibiotic from your healthcare provider when you are sick. Some illnesses respond to antibiotics and others do not. Talk to your healthcare provider and discuss your options, including antibiotic use, when you are sick.
-Always take any antibiotic exactly as prescribed and take the full dose. You will start to feel better as the medication takes effect, but don?t stop taking it. Finish the entire prescription as directed, unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.
-Never take an antibiotic prescribed to someone else. Their health status is different from yours and it?s not safe to take their medication, period.
-Talk to your healthcare provider about vaccines recommended for you and your family. Vaccines are an effective way to prevent infections that may require an antibiotic.
