Halloween Safety

Halloween is a fun, playful holiday for little ones who like to dress up and pretend to be super heroes, princesses, villains and all sorts of spooky characters. By taking a few trick-or-treating precautions, everyone will be safe and sound.
Inspect All Candy
Make a rule: no candy is to be eaten until you get home and everything is checked out by an adult. Discard any candy with open or torn packaging and anything homemade, unless you trust the person who made it.
Dress Safely
Some masks can minimize your child?s ability to see well, especially in the dark. Stay close to your child and help him or her navigate steps, steep driveways or uneven ground. Apply a strip of reflective tap on your child?s candy bag and also the back of the costume to maximize visibility for passing traffic.
Watch Your Step
Speaking of steep driveways and uneven ground, encourage your child to use sidewalks and driveways instead of walking across yards. The ground can be uneven and it?s dark, so being able to see where your feet are planted can be hard to do. Sidewalks and driveways are designated for foot traffic and should be relatively free of tripping hazards.
Remember Your Furry Friends
Some pets are afraid of or aggressive towards strangers. Be sure and keep all four-legged family members safely in a kennel or separate room away from the ringing doorbell.
