Air Quality Alerts and What They Mean

Have you ever been driving along the interstate and seen warnings about air quality, even signs that recommend carpooling or limiting outdoor activity on that particular day?
These Air Quality Alerts are warnings that forecasted weather conditions combined with existing ozone air contaminants can cause breathing difficulties for
children and anyone with respiratory issues*, including asthma, COPD, etc.
In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed an Air Quality Index (AQI) that is
used to report air quality. This AQI is divided into six categories indicating increasing levels of health concern. An AQI value over 300 represents hazardous
air quality and below 50 the air quality is good (see blog image for these categories).
On days valued above 101, recommended action steps are these:
- Limit outdoor activity
- Keep windows closed in the car or at home
- Avoid unnecessary trips by car
- If you must leave your home, carpool or take mass transit in an effort to reduce automobile emissions in the air
- Wear a mask over your mouth and nose when outside to reduce inhaled pollutants
- Those with respiratory issues should not leave home without a rescue inhaler
