Being born male, rather than female, predisposes men to be twice as likely to suffer an unintentional injury leading to death*. Whether at home or at work, taking safety precautions can help protect the guys in your life from injury and other potentially fatal accidents. Let's review a few safety tips for men in recognition of Men's Health Week and Father's Day, June 19.
Wear Safety Eyewear and Head Gear
Whether you are mowing the grass, changing the oil, building a swingset or cleaning out the gutters, protective eyewear should be worn to keep debris out of the eyes. Likewise, safety headgear such as helmets should be worn if your occupation includes construction, mining and transportation, to name a few.Have A Spotter
Speaking of cleaning out the gutters, never climb a ladder when you are home alone. Always have someone hold the ladder for you and never reach beyond the span of your arms.Follow All Safety Instructions
Whether you are working with hand tools in the garage or using the forklift at work, follow all safety instructions listed as it relates to that tool or piece of equipment, this includes but is not limited to speed, proper restraints and weight restrictions/limitations.Clean Up All Spills Immediately
Clean up all spills immediately and thoroughly. Falling or slipping on a spill is one of the most common accidental injuries in the workplace. Be sure to set out appropriate ?Wet Floor? signage when necessary.Plan Ahead for Emergencies
Have an eyewash solution available as well as fire extinguisher and first aid kit nearby in case of emergencies. Keep the poison control number handy too. Make sure your phone is nearby in case you need emergency medical services.*Statistic provided by Men?s Health Network, 2013.
