Keep Outdoor Allergens from Getting Inside

You can?t prevent the trees from blooming and pollen from spreading outside, but you can control the allergens that make it inside! Follow these tips to help keep your home free of the pollen, dust, mold and other allergens that aggravate spring time allergies.
Change Your Air Filters
Changing your air filters is one of the simplest ways to keep your indoor air clean and free of allergens. You should change your filter at least every three months, especially if pollen is high in your area.
Don?t Dust
Instead of traditional dusting with a dry cloth, use a wet rag to wipe down ceiling fans, light fixtures, widows and sills and baseboards.
Close the Windows
While it?s tempting to keep the windows open to let fresh air in, if anyone in your family is allergic to pollen, keep them closed and turn on the air conditioning. While that breeze might feel refreshing at first, it?s also bringing in aggravating allergens that will settle in your home.
Wash Your Bedding
Lots of people wash their sheets, comforters and pillows during their big spring clean, but try to wash your sheets once a week. Even if you?re keeping your windows closed, you can still bring pollen home on your hair and skin. Be sure to wash everything in at least 130?F water to kill any dust mites.
Use Your Dryer
It can also be tempting to line dry all that laundry outside, but your wet laundry acts like a magnet for allergens like pollen that linger in the outdoor air. Keep your laundry allergen-free by drying it in the dryer.
Keep Pets Out of the Bedroom and Off Furniture
Not only are lots of people allergic to their pet?s own dander, but indoor/outdoor pets bring in pollen, dust and dirt from the outside to the inside. While it?s impossible to keep pets out of the house completely, try to keep them out of the bedrooms and off sofas and chairs where they can transfer hard-to-get-rid-of allergens to your bedding and furniture.
Take Your Medicine
The best way to control allergic reactions to spring time allergens is to take an over-the-counter antihistamine, decongestant or nasal corticosteroid spray. Consult your healthcare provider to determine which would be best for you and your symptoms.
