Why?
Handwashing is like a "do-it-yourself" vaccine?it involves five simple and effective steps to reduce the spread of diarrheal and respiratory illness so you can stay healthy. Regular handwashing is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of germs to others.
When?
Hand hygiene is a simple and is recommended to be practiced in the following situations:
At school or at work:
? After using the restroom
? Before and after meetings where food is served
? After using someone else?s keyboard
? Before and after lunch
? After reading a magazine or a book from the break room or library
? When using shared equipment such as copiers, phones, etc.
? Before, during and after preparing food
? Before and after eating
? Before and after caring for someone who is sick
? Before and after treating a cut or wound
? After using the restroom
? After changing diapers
? After handling pet food or treats
? After touching your pet or cleaning up after it
? After taking out the garbage
How?
? Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. If you don?t have clean water, use a hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol. Remember hand sanitizers are not as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
? Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Lathering and scrubbing hands creates friction, which helps lift dirt, grease, and microbes from skin.
? Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.
? Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
? Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
