This week is Respiratory Care Week, so let?s take some time to review good lung health practices.
Stop Smoking
Smoking is linked to lung cancer, asthma, heart disease and stroke.
In addition to exposure to certain chemicals, the leading cause of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is smoking. COPD, the third leading cause of death in the United States, is an avoidable lung disease for which there is no cure.
A report published in September indicated that smoking worsens diabetes conditions.
Breathing Deeply
According to Rush University Medical Center, some simple deep breathing is good for the lungs because it encourages reaching your lungs? full capacity.
Posture
Like breathing deeply noted above, sitting straight and stretching your arms above your head periodically helps make room for the lungs and their ability to fill to capacity as you breathe in.
Stay Hydrated
The lungs use water to keep their mucus lining thin. The thinner lining helps the lungs function better.
Be Active
Regular, moderate activity accomplishes three goals at once: healthier lungs, healthier heart and better mood (via released endorphins).
